Women are currently experiencing a significant surge in influence, ranging from Beyoncé to the iconic figure of “Barbie.” However, it is important to acknowledge that women have been a formidable presence in the real estate industry for quite some time.
The Female Majority
Since beginning collecting data on home buyers in 1981, women have consistently ranked second only to married couples in terms of their share of the market. According to NAR’s 2022 Profile of Home Buyers and Sellers, single men accounted for approximately 10% of the market, while single women made up 17%. Bankrate further reports that nationwide, there are 10.76 million homes owned and occupied by single women, compared to 8.12 million homes for single men.
The real estate industry has also proven to be a fertile ground for women. The 2023 NAR Member Profile reveals that 62% of all NAR members are female, and this has been the case since 1978. Dave Liniger, co-founder of RE/MAX, has attributed the success of their business to their ability to recruit women agents in the early 1970s. It wasn’t until 1996 that female brokers outnumbered their male counterparts as a percentage of NAR membership. Today, 61% of brokers who are NAR members are female.

Century of Empowerment
In the perspective of director Greta Gerwig, the world of “Barbie” represents a place where Barbies stand up for each other. Similarly, the concept of women supporting women has long been a symbol of empowerment in the real estate industry.
When the National Association of Realtors (NAR) was established in 1908 with the goal of uniting real estate professionals in America, its membership consisted entirely of men. However, since the 1920s, female real estate agents and brokers have actively supported one another through official channels. During that era, various local real estate boards established women’s divisions to cater to female members. The Women’s Division of the California Association of REALTORS® served as a blueprint for the creation of the national Women’s Council in 1938. Even today, California remains at the forefront of women’s empowerment initiatives. In 2017, it launched WomanUp!(link is external), a program aimed at supporting women on their professional journeys.
Kerri Hartnett, the national president-elect of the Women’s Council of REALTORS® for 2023, emphasizes the importance of women supporting and uplifting each other, as it cultivates a sense of empowerment.
Since 2019, the Women’s Council has been granting Supporting Women in Real Estate grants(link is external) to assist state and local REALTOR® associations in developing programs that support women in their business and leadership roles. In 2023, three state associations and seven local associations were recipients of these grants.

Hartnett emphasizes that the act of sharing experiences, knowledge, and resources plays a crucial role in empowering women by instilling them with confidence, motivation, and belief in their own capabilities. This collective support system serves as a catalyst for women to conquer self-doubt, surpass societal obstacles, and wholeheartedly pursue their aspirations.
